In 1984, director James Cameron debuted The Terminator, creating one of science fiction's most iconic and original franchises of all time, ranking alongside other greats like The Matrix and Star Wars. The Terminator franchise brought some new ideas to the table, such as skull-headed killer robots with human skin and time travel to protect humanity's savior, but there's still room for familiar sci-fi tropes and clichés, too. Not even a classic franchise like The Terminator can escape genre tropes, but it doesn't have to, either.
