At the Made by Google Event today, the tech giant finally announced the next iteration in its Pixel smartphone series: the Google Pixel 8.
As the previous leaks showed, the Pixel 8's design does not stray much from its predecessor. Yet, the biggest change comes to the rear cameras on the Pixel 8, which are all in one big oval cutout instead of being partially separated, as shown in the Pixel 7 Pro. Nevertheless, the Pixel 8 series' rear cameras are still enclosed in that black bar design that debuted in the Pixel 6.
To ensure the Pixel 8 is more repair-friendly, Google announced today that it has partnered with iFixit to sell repair parts for the device (despite no such confirmation on the just announced Pixel Watch 2). The tech giant notes that the Pixel 8 features a new Acura display, making it brighter than its predecessor. Yet the more interesting reveal was the Pixel 8 Pro, which features a temperature sensor, allowing you to take the temperature of things from your forehead if you are feeling under the weather.
The Google Pixel 8 Pro will introduce a new 48MP ultrawide camera, while the Pixel 8's ultrawide camera is 12MP, though both will get the same 50MP wide camera. Both devices are powered by the new Tensor G3 chip, with the biggest change coming to the Pixel 8 series being the new AI integrations.
Most notably, the previously-leaked Magic Editor tool, a more advanced version of Magic Eraser, the Magic Editor allows users to significantly alter pictures, such as adjusting the time of day and adjusting faces in the images. No longer do you have to worry about someone making a goofy face or rolling their eyes at the photo you had to retake for the fifth time.
Pixel 8 Pro receives some significant camera upgrades, such as auto-focus on the front selfie camera and Pro Controls. Inspired by controls typically found on a DSLR camera, the Pixel 8 Pro will allow users to tweak the ISO, shutter speed, and the option to enable manual focus.
The Pixel 8 will be available in Peony Rose, Grey, and Black. In contrast, the Pixel 8 Pro will come in Sky Blue, Porcelain, and Black. Preordering begins today, starting at $699 for the Pixel 8 or $999 for the Pixel 8 Pro with shipping starting next week.
