Astro Boy was one of the first major anime franchises with a flashy boy robot mascot who instantly became recognizable in Japan. Astro Boy's success has turned the titular character into one of anime and manga's biggest icons and there's a strong case to be made for why he's also Osamu Tezuka's greatest creation. Astro Boy lives on as an evergreen property that's recently been reimagined as a darker, grittier series--Pluto--that comes from Naoki Urasawa of Monster fame. Pluto's anime adaptation is a fresh release that's already found a lot of success, yet many people are unaware of a similar Astro Boy reimagining that far precedes Pluto.
