Dynasty Warriors is back... again. The franchise that popularized the so-called musou genre will soon be getting a new mainline entry titled Dynasty Warriors Origins.
Announced during Thursday's State of Play 2024, Dynasty Warriors Origin was revealed via a brief trailer. It will follow on from 2018's Dynasty Warriors 9 for PS4, which was broadly panned as a step back for the franchise.
"What’s lost in the move towards an individually-centered story spread across a massive open world far outweighs the minor benefits that are gained," we wrote in our review at the time. "While the excellent button-mashing gameplay stays intact with great tweaks and additions, it wasn’t enough. The lack of multiplayer, missing alternate game modes, and emptiness of ancient China left me far from satisfied."
Dynasty Warriors 9 was followed by Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires, a strategy sim that was met with similarly mixed reviews.
Despite its occasionally rough track record, Dynasty Warriors has a passionate fanbase, with a history extending back to the original PlayStation. In recent years, Koei Tecmo has found considerable success with licensed spin-offs like Persona 5 Strikers, which add a different dimension to the classic formula while being broadly well-received by fans.
Dynasty Warriors Origins joins several other announcements from State of Play 2024, all of which you can read about right here. It will be out in 2025.
