When Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, Star Wars' previous Expanded Universe was discontinued and branded Star Wars Legends. In its place, Disney's new canon arose, paving the way for a sequel trilogy unencumbered by decades' worth of material with which general audiences would be unfamiliar. As the new Star Wars canon has unfolded though, elements from Legends have gradually been reintroduced for a new generation of fans.
