The 8Bitdo Ultimate wireless controller quickly established itself as one of our favorite third-party controllers thanks to its extensive features and relatively low price. Three years after its launch, 8Bitdo is bringing a significant series of upgrades to the already amazing controller with the 8Bitdo Ultimate 2, available to buy on Amazon for $59.99 in purple, white, and black.
The Ultimate 2 doesn’t distinguish itself from its predecessor aesthetically, retaining the same Xbox-style layout with offset analog sticks. However, a closer inspection reveals that 8Bitdo has included a pair of two smaller triggers positioned slightly under the two shoulder buttons in addition to the two back paddles found on the original Ultimate controller. The two primary triggers have also been improved with adjustable travel distance and Hall-effect sensors for improved accuracy. However, perhaps the coolest addition to the inputs on this controller are its six-axis motion controls, a rare feature in third-party controllers.
While 8Bitdo upgraded the joysticks on the original Ultimate wireless controller with Hall-effect sensors about a year ago, the joysticks on the Ultimate 2 have been improved with tunneling magneto-resistance sensors, which offer greater accuracy and are more power efficient. The joysticks also feature an RGB light ring which can be adjusted using the 8Bitdo Ultimate software, which also allows you to remap all of your controller inputs.
The Ultimate 2 doesn’t feature Bluetooth connectivity, but is still compatible with Windows and Android devices thanks to its 2.4 GHz wireless dongle. And, just like the original controller, the Ultimate 2 also comes packaged with a dedicated charging stand, this time with RGB lighting built into the base.
